Hello all, I’m delighted so many of you have fed back to me you like and enjoy my blog and that many of you interact by leaving comments. I have drawn up my own policy on comments so that comments can be a useful and friendly place for people to leave comments if they wish. I’ve done this to prevent comments from being rude, abusive or spam. I have highlighted it I think twice now just to make comment authors aware before conversations continued. I also posted the policy on the About Me page. Where today I received a enquiry from a visitor asking do I hold a Data Licence Protection Licence for the information I receive when you leave a comment.
So please read my comments policy below and the May 24th Update to answer the Data Protection Licence enquiry. I think its great to see comments on the posts I publish here but if you are not comfortable with what is contained in this policy then please refrain from using the comment facility. I hope you don’t feel that way but I felt I needed to post this. Many thanks for taking the time to read this
This is a polite message to all visitors wishing to leave comments. The reason Lightmoor Life exists is to help residents learn what’s happening and feel part of the community. Lightmoor Life invites and welcomes residents to leave comments on articles posted. You are asked to leave your name and I would ask you do that (be it full or just first name) rather than your street or other comment. Lightmoor Life insists you treat other responses with the respect you would expect someone else to give your comments. Lightmoor Life can remove comments if it sees fit without consultation. Lightmoor Life allows comments to be published without first being moderated as we’re all grown ups but if comments start to degrade then comments will be moderated before publishing or deleted. Your email address is NOT published but is received by Lightmoor Life with an IP address . Happy for people to debate ideas in comments but please put your name down and treat each other with respect you would expect. Thank you everyone.
Update 24th May 2011 – Following a comment from a visitor enquiring about Data Protection Licence I spoke today to the Information Commissioner’s Office to clarify the situation. I explained fully that this blog (my personal blog) is built on WordPress.com which 1000s of blogs in the UK and around the world are built on and that its comments feature sends me an email when a visitor leaves a comment. That email includes the email address the visitor entered and also includes an IP address (meaningless to me). Once I read the comment to ensure its not rude or abusive in my opinion, I delete that email. If the comment is rude or abusive I delete the comment and the email. I do NOT store these emails. I highlight I receive this information so as to discourage rude, abusive, spam comments. I also gave the Information Commissioner’s Office my blog address so they could view it, they went away to discuss this and called me back soon after to say I do NOT require a Data Protection Licence and am covered by the ‘domestic and recreation exemption’ as its a personal blog and I do not store the email I receive. If anyone has any further enquires please take it up with the Information Commissioner’s Office.
